Cursillo
"Cursillo" is a Spanish word which
literally means "course" or "track". The full
name, "Cursillo in Cristiandad" means "a short course
in Christian living." Cursillos started in Spain by Roman
Catholic lay persons who were seeking ways to Christianize their
environments -- the real life situations in which they found
themselves. The Cursillo movement is an approach to evangelism which
finds strength and encouragement in small groups which meet regularly.
Most people who are part of a Cursillo start by attending a three day
weekend retreat. Applicants must be sponsored by someone who is
already a part of Cursillo, a Cursillista. Cursillo weekends are held
in February, June and October in our diocese. For more information,
contact Fr. Maltby.
Catholics, Lutherans, Presbyterians and Episcopalians all
participate in their own form of Cursillo. For more information about
Episcopal Cursillo, visit www.episcopalcursillo.org.
Cursillistas regularly meet in larger reunion
groups called "Ultreya", another Spanish word meaning
"Onward". Ultreyas are held regularly in various churches
around the Midlands.
Happening
Happening is a similar spiritual renewal program
for teenagers. Weekend retreats are designed for those who have
completed ninth grade through the freshman year of college. Adults may
attend as "geritols". Three Happening weekends are held per
year in February, June and October. See The
Diocesan Website for more information.
